The Need

Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. The onset of these seizures can occur without warning at any time in our life, and for a variety of reasons including: head injury, infection, brain tumor and even heredity.  However, for the vast majority of the 2.5 million Americans with epilepsy, no cause can be found.

Typically, brain cells communicate with one another through electrical impulses that work together to control the body's movement and keep the body's organs functioning properly.  When thousands to millions of electrical impulses occur at the same time producing abnormal brain electrical activity, the result can be a seizure.

Major medical advances have been made in the last century that helps to control or even eliminate these seizures; however, for almost 25% of the people with epilepsy these seizures are difficult to control.  They happen at unpredictable times and cause problems in the home, school, and workplace.
